The Signal Files · File 04
We named a business that does not exist. Here is the whole file.
Real client work is confidential, which is why naming case studies are always the tidy after-picture. So we ran the sprint on a business we invented, and published every artefact it produced.
Klarwerk is fictional. The method, the artefacts and the ten-day shape are exactly what a paying client receives. Where a real sprint would show live AI answers, we say so.
Step oneThe brief
A two-person bookkeeping practice in Heidelberg, eleven years old, serving one-person companies and freelancers. Its actual product is calm: clients stop dreading the tax letter. Its name was the founder's surname plus Steuerberatung, and nobody could spell it over the phone.
That is the whole problem worth solving. Not we need a fresh look. A name people cannot repeat is a name that cannot be recommended, by a human or by a machine.
Step twoWhat the machines said first
With a real client this step is measured, not written: we ask the models the questions their buyers ask, and record what comes back. Here the client is invented, so treat this section as the shape of the finding rather than the finding itself.
The pattern is consistent enough to predict. Ask an assistant for a bookkeeper for freelancers in a mid-sized German city and it returns directories and the two or three practices whose own pages state plainly who they serve. Everyone else is invisible, not because they are worse, but because nothing on their site says the sentence a model would need to quote.
Step threeSixty candidates, three survivors
Sixty is not a boast, it is the working volume needed before the good ones appear. The screen removes anything unspellable, anything already taken in the category, and anything a model would confuse with a bigger entity. Three reached the founder.
| Finalist | Why it survived | Why it did not win |
|---|---|---|
| Klarwerk | Two everyday words, spellable on the first try by phone. Klar carries the promise without claiming it. Werk says workshop, not corporation. | Nothing. This one won. |
| Rechenraum | Warmer than the category, and the spatial image suits a practice people visit. | Models associate Rechenraum with data centres and computing. The brand would spend years correcting a machine's first guess. |
| Beleg & Co. | Insider-accurate and quietly funny to anyone who has filed a receipt. | The ampersand breaks in URLs, handles and half the forms the business has to fill in. A name that fights infrastructure loses. |
Domain, handle and obvious trademark conflicts are checked before the founder ever sees the shortlist. Falling in love with a name that is already taken is an avoidable kind of heartbreak.
Step fourThe deliverable
The sprint does not end with a name. It ends with one page that tells anyone, including a machine, how the brand is allowed to speak. This is that page, in full.
One page. A new hire, a freelance copywriter and an AI assistant can all write on brand from it by the end of the day.
Step fiveThe machine-readable twin
A voice guideline nobody can load into a tool is a PDF that dies in a folder. Every Voice Card ships with the same content as structured data, so the client's own AI tools and our agents write from the identical source.

Paste it into the tool the team already uses. The brand stops depending on who happens to be writing.
Ten working days, fixed scope.
That is the entire Name and Voice Sprint: the field read, the naming, the voice system, and the sentences AI should repeat about you. Your version arrives as the card above, with your name on it.
